The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday alleged that some aspirants seeking political offices on its platform were being sponsored by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party stated that it had already identified and confronted the affected aspirants, stressing that they would not secure party tickets ahead of the primaries scheduled for Friday.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osa Director, said the party was determined to prevent infiltration by political opportunists allegedly planted by the ruling party. He emphasized that the NDC was not a special-purpose vehicle for any individual, insisting that no aspirant would ride on the popularity of the Peter Obi-Rabiu Kwankwaso alliance to secure votes or political relevance within the party.
Director added that only aspirants with verifiable political pedigree and a demonstrated commitment to the party’s principles and values would be considered for tickets. He explained that, although no one was disqualified during screening, those identified as “moles” sponsored by the APC were confronted and informed that they would not get tickets.
He further quoted the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, as saying that the NDC was not a “special multipurpose vehicle” for politicians seeking personal advantage. The party has put measures in place to check opportunistic aspirants and prevent them from exploiting the NDC platform. Director noted that lessons were learned from the Labour Party’s past experiences, particularly regarding aspirants from the diaspora seeking to benefit from the Obi-Kwankwaso political wave, and the NDC intends not to repeat similar mistakes.
