The Delta State House of Assembly has taken the first reading of the Delta State Tenancy and Recovery of Premises Bill, 2026.
The Bill, which was reintroduced before the House, seeks to repeal the existing Rent Control and Recovery of Residential Premises Law of 1977 and establish a new legal framework for regulating landlord-tenant relationships and the recovery of premises in the state.
At Wednesday’s plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the House granted leave for the reintroduction of the Bill.
The motion was moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, and seconded by the member representing Burutu One State Constituency, Hon. Anthony Alapala.
The Bill was subsequently read for the first time on the floor of the House.
Following the first reading, Speaker Emomotimi Guwor deferred the second reading of the Bill to the next sitting.
The Speaker explained that the Bill, which had earlier been presented before the House, was reintroduced following amendments to some of its provisions.
When enacted, the proposed legislation is expected to provide a more comprehensive legal framework for landlord-tenant relations and the recovery of premises across Delta State.
