The Federal Government has announced the full closure of the First Niger Bridge, Onitsha, from Monday, September 7 to Monday, September 21, 2026, to allow emergency maintenance and rehabilitation works.
The intervention follows concerns over the deteriorating carriageway and vandalised bridge components. Motorists have been advised to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, during the closure.
The works will include asphalt rehabilitation, repairs to damaged components, and installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras. Authorities say the work will continue day and night to ensure speedy completion.
