…Says democracy must be strengthened through ideas, not intimidation
Hon. Barr. Vincent Ekenedilichukwu Ofumelu, a former member of the House of Representatives and an aspirant for the House of Representatives, Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency of Anambra State, under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed profound concern over the reported blockade and harassment of Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), by a group of youths in Benue State.
The former federal lawmaker described the development as deeply disturbing and a regrettable manifestation of political intolerance, warning that the normalisation of intimidation, mob action and politically motivated hostility poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s democratic culture.
Reports indicate that the incident occurred along the Makurdi–Gboko Highway on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, while Mr. Obi was said to be on a condolence visit to survivors and bereaved families affected by the tragic terrorist attack on the Yelwata Community in 2025.
Hon. Ofumelu noted that irrespective of political persuasion, ideology or party affiliation, every Nigerian is entitled to freedom of movement, association and peaceful engagement within the ambit of the law.
He cautioned that democracy cannot thrive where citizens and political actors are subjected to harassment or intimidation simply because of their political convictions or affiliations.
According to him, the growing tendency to weaponise political differences and deploy groups of youths as instruments of intimidation is antithetical to the fundamental principles upon which a stable and progressive democracy is built.
“Political contestation must never be misconstrued as warfare. Those who hold opposing political views are not enemies of the state, and disagreement must not become a justification for hostility or violence.
“We may differ profoundly on the direction and leadership of our country, but such differences must be expressed with civility, tolerance and respect for the democratic rights of others. Nigeria’s future cannot be secured through intimidation; it must be shaped through superior ideas and the sovereign power of the ballot,” he stated.
Hon. Ofumelu, however, commended the Benue State Command of the Nigeria Police Force for its reported prompt intervention and the apprehension of some persons allegedly connected with the incident.
He urged the relevant security authorities to conduct a comprehensive and painstaking investigation, stressing that the inquiry should not be restricted merely to those physically present at the scene but should extend to uncovering whether there were individuals or interests that instigated, orchestrated or sponsored the alleged action.
As Nigeria gradually approaches the 2027 general elections, the former federal lawmaker called on political leaders, candidates and their supporters to demonstrate restraint and uphold the highest standards of democratic conduct.
He particularly appealed to Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be exploited as instruments of political violence, harassment or social disorder, noting that they have a far more consequential role to play in shaping the nation’s future.
Hon. Ofumelu further admonished political actors across party lines to desist from sponsoring, recruiting or covertly encouraging individuals or groups to undermine, intimidate or attack perceived political opponents.
He maintained that electoral competition should be anchored on competence, character, vision and the ability to offer practical solutions to the numerous challenges confronting Nigerians.
Hon. Barr. Vincent Ekenedilichukwu Ofumelu reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to peaceful and issue-based political engagement, accountability, the rule of law and the sanctity of democratic institutions.
He stressed that the Nigeria of the future must emerge from a culture of tolerance, responsible leadership and constructive engagement, where the ballot—not brute force, intimidation or violence—remains the ultimate instrument through which the people freely determine their leaders.
