The Honourable Member representing Isoko South Constituency II in the Delta State House of Assembly and APC flag bearer for the 2027 DSHA election, Hon. (Chief) Dr. Ferguson Onwo, KSC, earlier today joined other members of the Delta State House Committee on Environment, Oil and Gas, led by the Chairman, Hon. Festus Utuama, on an on-the-spot assessment visit to the site of the OML 30 oil spill at Uzere.
Hon. Onwo, who represents Isoko South Constituency II, also serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Committee.
Upon arrival at the site, the Committee was received by the Heritage Energy and Gas Project Manager, Dr. Charles Ayaka, who led the lawmakers to the affected area and source of the spill, where they had a firsthand assessment of the extent of the damage and its impact on the environment and the host community.
While addressing the youths of Uzere, Hon. Onwo commended them and the entire people of Uzere for their peaceful and responsible disposition in the face of the impact of the oil spill.
He noted that their cooperation was highly commendable, stressing that it demonstrated the importance of dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful engagement in addressing issues affecting host communities.
The Committee urged Heritage Energy and other relevant stakeholders to take prompt and appropriate measures to mitigate the effects of the spill, protect the environment and engage meaningfully with the host community in accordance with the provisions and regulations of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The Delta State House Committee on Environment, Oil and Gas reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the environment, safeguarding the interests of host communities and promoting responsible, transparent and sustainable oil and gas operations across Delta State.
Also present during the assessment were the Member representing Ndokwa West Constituency, Hon. Prince Emeka Asemutha; Member representing Ughelli North Constituency I, Hon. Matthew Omonade; and Member representing Isoko South Constituency I, Hon. Bino Obowomano Owhede.
Others present were the Executive Chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area, Hon. Comr. Warri Ovoke, and the Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Zino Osuofa.
