The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has begun moves to introduce age restrictions for social media use in the country as part of efforts to protect children from harmful online content.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed that the government has launched a public consultation to gather opinions from parents, educators, youths, and stakeholders on how best to regulate children’s access to social media platforms.
The proposed policy may introduce a minimum age requirement and stronger age-verification systems for platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, with the aim of promoting safer online experiences for young Nigerians.
