Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has empowered 500 women in Cross River State with N50,000 each under the Renewed Hope Initiative Economic Empowerment Programme.
The initiative was launched on Friday in Calabar, where Mrs Tinubu, represented by the state governor’s wife, Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, explained that the financial support is a grant, not a loan, aimed at strengthening women-led businesses nationwide.
According to her, the programme will benefit 18,500 women across Nigeria, with 500 beneficiaries from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“This initiative is designed to uplift women with N50,000 each as seed support. It is not a loan but a seed from the Renewed Hope Initiative. When you empower a woman, you empower a household,” she said.
The scheme, implemented in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which committed N1 billion to the project, targets traders and small-scale entrepreneurs.
Mrs Tinubu commended the foundation for its contribution, noting that the initiative is a bold step toward enhancing women’s financial independence and supporting household stability.
“We have seen how a little support in the hands of a woman becomes a seed for something greater—school fees are paid, families are fed, homes sustained, and communities uplifted,” she added.
