The 9th National Youth Games is set to kickoff on August 26th, 2025, and conclude on September 6th, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State. As the city gears up for this exciting event, a visit to the Stephen Keshi Stadium reveals the immense preparations underway. The stadium is buzzing with activities, showcasing the hard work and dedication of the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori.
The games will light up Asaba from August 26th to September 6th, 2025, with young athletes from across Nigeria converging for about twelve days for the thrilling competition. Since the commencement of the National Youth Games in 2015, Team Delta has maintained its top position on the medals table. This year’s event is themed, ‘We Are the Future’. The next host of the competition is Lagos.
The chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, said that; “All arrangements are in top gear to ensure successful hosting of the event”.
He reiterated the continuous support of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff F.O Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State, by providing all that are necessary for the smooth hosting of the competition.
He said; “This good gesture is in line with the MORE Agenda and the determination of the Governor for the state to continue to hold the number one position in sports in Nigeria”.
The chairman of the Sports Commission, who is also the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee LOC, of the competition, Mr Onoriode, is a renowned sports enthusiast with long history of grassroot sports development.
Over the years, he has established and sponsored several grassroot football clubs and nurtured young boys and girls, with some of them playing locally and others at the international stage. Therefore, it’s not surprising when his appointment reverberated amongst sports lovers across Delta State and beyond. His appointment can be succinctly described as a square peg in a square hole.
As preparations climax, leading to a funfair kickoff of the competition, sports fans are enjoined to converge at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba, to savour the excitements of the youthful games and unity in diversity.
The major timeline of the event are; kickoff is August 26th, opening ceremony is August 29th at Stephen Keshi stadium, closing ceremony is scheduled for September 6th while departure is September 7th, 2025.
