A civic accountability group, MonITNG, has condemned the Anambra State House of Assembly for targeting Hon. Abuchi Bernad Udemezue, a lawmaker who revealed his constituency allowance. The group described the Assembly’s action as an attempt to gag openness and intimidate a lawmaker who acted in the interest of democracy.
According to MonITNG, the constituency allowance is a public fund meant for community development projects, not a private entitlement of lawmakers. They emphasized the need for transparency in governance, stating that public funds should be accounted for. The group argued that Udemezue’s actions were in the best interest of the people and that the Assembly’s move to summon him is an attempt to undermine transparency and accountability.
The group called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene and prevent what they described as an injustice against the people of Anambra. They warned that suspending Udemezue would set a “dangerous precedent” that transparency is a crime, while secrecy and impunity are protected. MonITNG urged the Assembly to promote transparency instead of punishing Udemezue for doing the right thing.
