Cross River State has launched a solar electrification project to power 10,000 homes across the state. The initiative, led by Governor Senator Bassey Otu, aims to provide reliable electricity to remote communities beyond the reach of traditional grid infrastructure. Each solar home system will include solar panels, charging ports, radio systems, and fans, improving access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy.
The project will cover all local government areas in the state, starting with Calabar South, Akpabuyo, Abi, and Ogoja. This collaboration between the Cross River State Government and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abuja, is expected to drive socio-economic growth and improve living conditions in rural areas. The initiative will bridge the energy gap, providing electricity to communities that have long relied on lanterns and generators for light.
Local government chairmen have lauded the governor’s efforts, describing the initiative as “intentional and people-centered leadership.” The project is part of the state’s broader commitment to renewable energy and rural development, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy and community growth. By providing reliable energy, the initiative is expected to boost economic activities, education, and overall quality of life for rural households.
