Ghana Plans to Use Nigeria’s Gas to Generate and Sell Electricity to Nigeria
Ghana has announced plans to generate electricity for sale to Nigeria, with Nigeria supplying natural gas while Ghana uses the gas to generate electricity.
Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, said the arrangement would operate like a “barter system,” with Ghana returning a portion of the electricity generated from the gas supplied by Nigeria.
DW Africa reported that the West African Gas Pipeline would be used for the project. The pipeline originates in Nigeria and passes through Benin and Togo before reaching Ghana.
Nigeria has about 210.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, while Ghana currently supplies electricity to Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
