The Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen has called on civil servants to treat their subordinates with kindness and compassion throughout their careers, emphasizing that life is about positively impacting those around them.
Mr. Ekedayen made this call during the valedictory session held in honor of Mr. Frank Isume, who retired from active service on March 14, 2025 after a distinguished career.
Reflecting on Mr. Isume’s legacy, the commissioner remarked:
“I cannot extend the time; otherwise, I would have gladly asked you to stay longer. You struck me as a gentleman—God-fearing, honest, intelligent, hardworking, supportive, and obedient. If you were an irresponsible person, the peace and warmth we feel today would not have been present. It is always good to be good, and in the end, goodness to others benefits you as well.”
He further encouraged Mr. Isume, stating, “Although you may be leaving today, there are brighter days ahead. I wish you all of God’s blessings as you embark on this new phase of life.”
The Coordinator of Delta Cares, Dr. Patience Ogbewe, described retirement as a fresh beginning rather than an end, stating “Retirement is not the end of the world; in fact, it is a time to ‘re-tire’—renewing your strength for new journeys ahead. I pray that the peace you have exuded throughout your service will always remain in your home.”
Also, Ms. Nkechi Maduemezie, Director of Statistics in the ministry, spoke warmly of Mr. Isume’s leadership and stated, “The twinkle in your eyes has always been an encouragement. You allowed us to soar high, and we will miss your signature ‘thank you’ each time we submitted a memo—even when edits were needed. I wish you well, sir.”
Many others, including a retired director from the ministry Mr. Sunday Omamofo, his immediate staff, staff from the accounts department and others, paid glowing tributes, describing him as a father, mentor, and leader who left an indelible mark on the ministry.
In his response, Mr. Frank Isume recounted his journey, which began in April 1990, and expressed gratitude for the experiences all the way.
“It has not been easy, but we thank God for everything,” he stated, describing his employment as an “accidental” opportunity that turned into a fulfilling career.
He expressed deep appreciation to his colleagues and superiors, saying, “I feel favored. I have never had a bad experience with any of my bosses, and now I am leaving with someone who has become my brother.”
He also offered words of advice to his colleagues, urging them to maintain integrity in their service:
“People are always watching you, even when you don’t realize it. I encourage you to do the right thing at all times, because your actions might be reported without your knowledge.
As Mr. Isume embarks on this new chapter, his colleagues, friends, and well-wishers celebrate his remarkable contributions and wish him a joyful and fulfilling retirement.
