Today, May 9 2025, the Delta State House of Assembly held a public hearing on the Delta State Security Corps Agency Bill, presided over by the Leader of the House, Hon. Engr. Emeka Nwaobi. The event was organized by a Joint Committee of the Special Committee on Bills and the House Committee on Security, in line with the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive and participatory lawmaking.

The proposed legislation seeks to establish a legal framework to complement the efforts of His Excellency, the Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori in enhancing security across Delta State.

Key provisions of the Bill include:

• The recruitment of thirty (30) able-bodied men from each INEC Ward in the state.
• A three percent (3%) counterpart funding from Local Government Councils to support the initiative.

The public hearing witnessed robust engagement from critical stakeholders, including:

• The Nigeria Police Force
• The Department of State Services (DSS)
• The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)
• Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
• The Office of the Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice
• Other security experts and community leaders

Participants submitted memoranda and expressed strong support for the Bill, commending the Delta State House of Assembly for its proactive approach in addressing security challenges.

Following the public hearing, the Joint Committee will review all submissions and make necessary adjustments before presenting a final report to the House for further legislative action.
