A viral video making the rounds on social media has confirmed that the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Anambra State, Evang. Nicholas Ukachukwu, on Sunday ran into serious trouble as he was held hostage at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, over an outstanding debt of $1.2 million.
Ukachukwu was confronted inside the luxury hotel by creditors to whom he owes the outrageous sum and was prevented from leaving. It is yet to be confirmed whether he was later released after interventions were made. The heated drama created tension within the hotel premises, drawing the attention of guests, staff, and security operatives.
According to sources, the debt allegedly stemmed from business dealings directly linked to the APC candidate. Creditors, frustrated after repeated efforts to recover their money, finally cornered him at the Abuja hotel, forcing the matter into the public domain.
The development has jolted political circles in Anambra State, especially with the governorship election just weeks away. The incident could deliver a major blow to Ukachukwu’s campaign, raising fresh doubts about his financial credibility and overall suitability to lead the State.
Observers, including myself also caution that Anambra’s public treasury must never be viewed as an escape route for private debts, stressing that the state deserves leaders of unquestionable financial integrity.
As at the time of this report, neither the APC leadership nor Ukachukwu’s campaign team had issued an official statement, while the candidate himself remained silent on the controversy.
