The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has charged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies to ensure sustained peace and security across Delta State.
Rt. Hon. Guwor gave the charge on Thursday while playing host to the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, who led his management team on a familiarisation visit to the State Assembly complex in Asaba.
Welcoming the Police Commissioner and his entourage, the Speaker described Delta as a peaceful state and expressed confidence in CP Adesola’s capacity to further consolidate the prevailing calm, noting that the state was not new to him, having served there earlier in his policing career.
“Delta State remains one of the most peaceful states in the country, and this did not happen by chance,” Guwor said. “It is the result of sustained collaboration among security agencies, government institutions and the people. We are confident that with your experience and familiarity with the terrain, you will do even more to strengthen peace and security in our dear state.”
The Speaker, who was flanked by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowvowo, principal officers and members of the House, assured the Police of the legislature’s continuous support in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
“As lawmakers elected to represent the people of Delta State, we will continue to support the Nigeria Police and other security agencies through enabling laws, advocacy and partnership,” he stated. “We urge you to work closely with sister security agencies to ensure that peace and security are promoted in every nook and cranny of the state.”
Earlier in his remarks, CP Aina Adesola said the visit was part of his familiarisation tour following his assumption of office, stressing that the State House of Assembly remained a critical stakeholder in the maintenance of peace and security.
“The legislature plays a vital role in promoting security through lawmaking and oversight,” the Commissioner said. “It is therefore important for us to build a strong working relationship with you.”
CP Adesola disclosed that although he had served in Delta State in his early years as a young police officer, he was fully prepared to work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure lasting peace.
“I am ready to partner with lawmakers representing the various constituencies across the state,” he added. “There is a clear need for mutual cooperation as we join forces to combat all forms of criminality and ensure the safety of lives and property.”
The high point of the visit was the presentation of souvenirs by the State Assembly to the Commissioner of Police and members of his management team, symbolising cordial relations and institutional support between the legislature and the Police Command.
